If this is your first PCS to Fort Hood — or your fourth — there is more to this place than the gate you drive through. There is a Hill Country, a Friday night, a small-town square, and a school your kids will actually love. Stay long enough and Central Texas stops feeling like an assignment.
The center of the
Texas Triangle.
Fort Hood sits at the geographic heart of Texas — within a tank of gas of every major city in the state. A spontaneous Saturday in Austin, a Friday-night dinner in Waco, an Astros game in Houston, a riverwalk evening in San Antonio, a shopping run to Dallas. Six towns, six characters.
School, the real question.
Consistently the highest-rated district in the region. Strong academics, well-funded extracurriculars, and an active community of parents. Worth the longer commute for many families.
Small, tight-knit, and consistently top-performing. The kind of district where teachers know your child by their second day. Limited capacity — homes here are competitive.
The region's largest district — and the one most military families will use. Includes Harker Heights High, Shoemaker, and Ellison. Very experienced with PCS transitions and military children.
Tight-knit, military-friendly, and in a quieter setting on the west side of post. Strong athletics tradition, smaller class sizes than Killeen, and an easier transition for first-graders and below.
A bigger district with more program variety — IB, dual-language, and a well-regarded magnet program. Worth a look if you want broader options and don't mind a longer drive to post.
Holy Trinity Catholic, Providence Preparatory, Memorial Christian Academy, and the Texas charter school networks (IDEA, Harmony) all have campuses serving the region. Worth comparing if your family wants alternatives.
A calendar worth circling.
Outside, where you belong.
Clear water, limestone shores, and some of the best bass fishing in the state. Cliffside trails, kayak launches, and a public swimming beach at Dana Peak.
The Belton Lake Outdoor Recreation Area is a military rec gem — cabins, RV sites, paintball, ziplines, and a private beach. ID-card priority. Worth a Saturday.
Texas's first state park. Mossy creek bottoms, pecan groves, and easy hikes that wear out kids and dogs in equal measure. A perfect Sunday-morning destination.
Five miles of trail along the Leon River, fossil beds the kids will lose their minds over, and birdsong loud enough to drown out the day. Free, and it shows up on no tourist map.
